Slide Night | A Glimpse Into A Time Long Past
It all started with slide night. My amazing Pop (92) was visiting us from his hometown of Kootingal and he brought with him boxes and boxes of slides from the ‘old days’. As each little square slid onto the projector, it was a glimpse into a time long past, a time that exists now only in memories.
The slides were of the Gold Coast back in the ‘60s and ‘70s – of Kirra beach shacks long demolished, of trips to Currumbin Bird Sanctuary (as it was known then) and of my beautiful Nan, who is sadly no longer with us, and their family.
With each one came a story of triumphs and hardships, of milestones and significant moments in time, of family holidays. It got me thinking about the photos I cherish of my family, and it’s not always the happy smiling faces. It’s the little chubby toddler legs, the crinkle in their nose when they laugh, the gappy teeth – the fleeting moments in time that are gone before you even realised their significance.
This changed the way I view photography. I aim to take the kind of photos that make you feel things by looking at them. The kind of photos that your kids and their kids look back on, just as we did with my Pop. As tangible heirlooms that offer a glimpse into a time past.
I cherish those slides more than anything in the world.
More than just pretty smiling faces, it’s capturing life in all of its beautiful chaos. If you’re in need of some updated family pics, get in touch. Your future self will thank you.
